The Week In Review
7 September 2012

Hey, happy first week of Spring.

There are lambs running around our office, flowers popping up in weird places, and one guy's sneezing non-stop with hay fever. I love this season.

This also means that I have to start gearing up for all the amazing summer tours that are heading our way. That includes the one and only Nicki Minaj, who is hitting up Auckland on November 24, and who we have a pretty sweet competition running for right now (it finishes up on Sunday night, so I hope you're reading this before then).

You can win a double pass to the show, plus a full set of O.P.I Nicki Minaj nail polish.

I had to ask a couple of my girl friends if the nail polish was a good thing to win, and they all said "Yes, I would love you forever if you won me that", which kind of makes me want to steal the prize, but I know you probably want it just as much, so I won't. You're welcome.

If you haven't already entered, do it HERE

Ok, I'm going to go keep sneezing now, you have a great week.

Nina McSweeney – Lost In TranslationEllie Goulding – Anything Could Happen

This week has been a great week for lady singers. I've just discovered Nina McSweeney, an Aucklander who's been sneaking under the radar up until now.I very much recommend you check out her song 'Lost In Translation'  (it's got a heavy Portishead influence, if that means anything to you).

The best music video of the week is Ellie Goulding's 'Anything Could Happen'. It's one of those rare videos that straddles the line between story and pretty visuals while adding meaning to the song. It turns out the song is pretty deep for a pop tune.

Bloc Party – TruthRihanna – Cockiness Remix

I'm a sucker for a good acoustic performance of a normally electric song. And I also like Bloc Party (as everyone should). So when they stripped down their new love song 'Truth' for BBC to just an acoustic guitar and piano, I was more than happy with the outcome.

The first line of Rihanna's 'Cockiness' made me almost spit out the mouthful of coffee I was drinking when I first heard it. I couldn't believe my ears. It's probably genius. Anyway, here's a sweet remix by A$AP Rocky.

Competition: Win The Presets - Pacifica

We've got 2 copies of the legendary Aussie electronic band The Presets' new album Pacifica to give away, because it's good and you deserve some goodness in your life.

Just email infoNZ@umusic.com with the subject line 'The Presets please', and you're in to win.

Easy as.

Album Of The Week: Dear Time's Waste - Some Kind Of Eden

An amazingly haunting and moody new album from NZ's own Dear Time's Waste.

This whole album comes from the mind of Claire Duncan, who is an incredibly talented musician with a great way with words. So if you don't need your music to be loud and thumping, then this is a great album to check out.
